Background

School for Life in ThailandWhen a massive tsunami devastated southern Thailand and many other countries in December 2004, the children in these regions were particularly affected. They were the first to lack water and food and they were most vulnerable to disease and abuse. Therefore they needed a future, a permanent home, and a good education. A few days after the tsunami, Niels Stolberg, CEO of the Bremen Beluga Shipping GmbH, decided to help the children.

Today, the Beluga School for Life is home to 150 children from unfortunate backgrounds, including tsunami survivors, children from poor families and children without domestic security. The educational area of the project comprises the family area, the Small Kids’ House, the kindergarten, the elementary and secondary school, as well as six learning centers. The sustainable development approach shapes the educational concept. The children are to learn and live in a socially competent, environmentally responsible and entrepreneurially active fashion.
